Author: James John

If you're a connoisseur of fine beer, the day may come when you've grown weary of sampling the creations of others.  If you can no longer satisfy your cravings, you may want to take the plunge and try your hand at home brewing beer of your own.  Many people are afraid to start brewing their own beer because they think the process is intimidating, but it's really pretty simple.

There are some basic tools and equipment that you'll need to get started.  You can assemble the supplies yourself or purchase a home brewing kit that includes everything you need.  The basic supplies will include a large pot, a thermometer, a siphon and clamp, a covered fermenter, and bottling supplies.  The bottling supplies must be sterilized prior to bottling the brew using a basic bleach solution.

Once the tools have been assembled, you're ready to think about the ingredients you'll use for your own brew.  There are specialized ingredients for a basic beer recipe that include some type of sugar, malt extract, ale yeast, and hops.  Many cities have retailers that carry these ingredients or they can be purchased online.  You can find a variety of beer recipes by doing a simple search online, allowing you to brew exactly what you want.  Once you discover how easy it is to brew your own beer, you'll have a lot of fun experimenting with different recipes.

The home brewing beer process begins with boiling the malt and hops together.  This boiling process is important because it sterilizes the ingredients and cooks off the natural bitterness.  After the mixture cools, the yeast is added and the fermentation process begins.  The mixture is placed in the fermentation container and allowed to sit for several weeks.  After fermentation is complete, the sugar product is mixed in.  Next, the brew is siphoned into the sterilized bottles.  Before you can enjoy your home brew, the beer has to age for 2 to 4 weeks.

If your first attempt at home brewing beer isn't successful, don't become discouraged.  There are a number of things that could have gone wrong, but you can find a trouble shooting guide to help you figure out where the problem lies.  Cleanliness is critical throughout the entire brewing process.  If bacteria were introduced at any time during the brewing process, the final product could be affected.  The pH of the water being used or a slight variation in the ingredients could affect the properties and flavors of the beer.  If something goes wrong, don't give up.  Take note of the entire brewing process, refer to the trouble shooting guide, and try again.  After a few attempts, you will be able to consistently brew fine beer.

Home brewing beer is a fun hobby and an easy way to indulge in your love of fine beer.  The process is very simple and the supplies are readily available and affordable.  After you've purchased the equipment needed, your only expense with be the ingredients for each batch.  Anybody that enjoys fine beer will find that home brewing beer is a great hobby.
